Birding on and around Caye Caulker |
| Belize's natural beauty and it's vast undeveloped land of dense jungle, high mountains, lagoons, mangrove swamp coastline and sea shoreline has become a birders Paradise! Forty percent of Belize is protected by National Parks and reserves! Located on the Southern end of the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize is on a migration route to and from North America. Caye Caulker is on that route and there are often concentrations of migrants here. Additionally, Caye Caulker has its own residents such as the Black Catbird, the Common Black Hawk, the Tropical Mockingbird, the White-crowned Pigeon, and many others. There are approx. 580 species of birds recorded in Belize and over 100 birds sited in our little island of Caye Caulker. |

There are two guides on Caye Caulker that can take you on an early morning bird watching tour. However, there are many areas on Caye Caulker that you can go bird watching on your own. There are low marshy areas, ocean front areas and medium density wooded areas. In fact, the birding just in the Lazy Iguana back yard can be very rewarding! Typically there are one or two types of Hummingbirds and many different Vireos, Warblers, Flycatchers, and the unexpected surprises. The Common Black Hawk is usually visible from the roof-top Palapa deck. After your early morning trek, join us for a cup of hot coffee or tea and listen to the birds sing! GO SLOW and take time to watch the birds! |
